Nigel Townsend-Hydrographic Surveyor (MBA, BSc, CPHS1)

Nigel began his career in hydrography with the Royal Australian Navy, and has over 18 years’ experience as an officer with the Royal Australian Navy Hydrographic Service, including command of commissioned Royal Australian Navy vessel HMAS SHEPPARTON and Executive Officer of Royal Navy survey vessel HMS BULLDOG.

 

Nigel has 22 years’ experience in Hydrographic Survey Projects for Nautical Charting and Coastal Zone Management. In 1998, Nigel obtained his IHO Cat A qualification, and in 2002 was Certified as a Level 1 Hydrographic Surveyor (CPHS1). Nigel departed the Navy in 2001 and has worked in the commercial Airborne LiDAR Bathymetry industry for the last 12 years.

Projects Nigel has undertaken include those for Nautical Charting, Coastal Zone Management and Oil and Gas exploration throughout Western Europe, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Australia.  He specialises in the design, bidding, management, execution, and quality control and delivery of shallow water hydrographic surveying and coastal mapping projects using Bathymetric LiDAR systems and MBES.

 

Nigel’s key skills include:

  • Coastal and Shallow Water Hydrographic Surveying and Bathymetric LiDAR specialist
  • Experience with the LADS Mk2, LADS Mk3, Riegl Vq820g, AHAB Chiroptera II and Hawkeye 3 LiDAR Systems, including Data Collection, Processing, Quality Control and Product Development.
  • Bathymetric LiDAR data management, processing and quality control
  • Project Management, sub-contractor and customer management
  • Operations Management

 

In 2011, Nigel was awarded the LCDR Peter Johnson Award for Industry Best Practice in Bathymetric LiDAR Project Management by JALBTCE (USA), for his exceptional project management in Doha, Qatar.
